This module aims to develop
students’ core competencies to form the basis of future competencies
development throughout the programme of study. In this module, the students
would consolidate their Construction / Engineering knowledge and skills for
practical applications, and develop their awareness of impacts on the
environment, commerce, society and individual brought about by various
construction and engineering activities.

· Personal and professional skills development planning, reflection and evaluation.
· Planning, monitoring and controlling minor projects
· Teamwork: responsibilities and participation.
· Project management and group work
· Design methods and constraints
· Creative thinking and problem-solving techniques
· Mapping, Sketching, hand-drawing, technical drawing and computer-aided-design
· Prototyping and model building
· Computer-Aided Design drawing
· Professional application
· Written communication: formal report, lay summary, user-manual, etc
Learning Outcomes for the module
At the end of this module, students will be able to:
· Apply appropriate practical and relevant knowledge and skills to solve real life problems within the context of sustainability and constraints, such as materials, processes, legal, contractual and health and safety issues
· Exercise critical thinking in the context of open-ended problems to arrive at solutions using creativity and innovation tools, taking a product/service from concept through to a detailed design stage.
· Undertake discipline specific codes of practice and industry standards.
· Apply appropriate knowledge and skills to communicate effectively with a wide range of audience - construction, technical specialists and laypersons.
· Develop self-awareness and awareness of local and global issues; identify their roles within a team and their positive/negative impacts on the environment and society.
· Record and reflect on their learning, skills and development needs.
