ADVANCED MODELLING TECHNIQUES (EG5045_1)

Main topics of study:

Complex numbers, Complex Variables, Use of complex numbers and variables in applications.

Ordinary Differential Equations and Series, partial differential equations. System and dynamics modelling by means of differential equations.

Laplace transform and its application to solving ordinary differential equations.

Fourier series and transform, and their application to solving ordinary differential equations.

Mathematical modelling: use of C/Matlab computing languages to solve engineering problems.

DYNAMICS AND CONTROL (EG5048_1)

Main topics of study:

  • System modelling: spring-mass systems, dumpers, liquid flow (in tank), electrical circuits, simple electrical motors.
  • Free and forced vibrations of damped one to three degree of freedom systems
  • Control system concepts: transfer functions and block diagrams; response to step and ramp inputs; root-locus design methods, frequency-domain design methods
  • Control design techniques for state-space representation
  • Analysis and design using Octave/Matlab
